About Mermru

Mermru is a lexicographic and computational resource for the languages of Tigrinya, Geʽez, and Amharic. It develops and provides Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools and resources that support both language learning and the computational processing of these languages.

The platform offers an extended lexicographic resource for Tigrinya, including extensive inflectional tables, nominalizations and affixation patterns, examples of contextual usage, and lists of derived verbs, nouns, and adjectives. It also provides English–Geʽez parallel corpora with capability to search in both languages, educational games, an alphabet module (with pronunciations and an illustrated dictionary), Geʽez transcription of English word pronunciation, as well as Geʽez numerals and their conversions.

In addition, Mermru proposes reforms to the writing systems of the Ethio-Semitic languages. These reforms range from changes in the alphabet and orthography to the representation of gemination and other features. The goal is to make the writing systems more effective for reflecting spoken distinctions, communication, education, and more compatible with digital technologies.
