The generation of words from the alphabetic soil to the surface forms.

We’re excited to announce that mermru.com has been relaunched with major improvements in both content and presentation. The website is now multilingual, already supporting English and Tigrinya, with Amharic currently in progress. Core functionalities have also been significantly enhanced.

The main sections of Mermru are the Dictionary, Conjugations, and Affixations. These are the result of many years of behind-the-scenes development, and they work best through user interaction. Feel free to explore, enter your own content, and see the results. For example, you can view the conjugation categories for the verb “በልዐ” (to eat) here, and explore the affixations associated with a given conjugation category here. The Educational Games and Alphabets sections make learning language interactive, engaging, and fun. The Ge’ez Resources section serves as a useful resource for learning and rsearching the Geez language, especially due to its powerful search capabilities. It functions as an extended contextual dictionary, allowing users to search in Ge’ez or English terms and learn from parallel English–Ge’ez texts about the contextual meanings and uses of the searched words or phrases.

The Numbers section introduces the Ge’ez numeral system and its conversion to and from Arabic numerals. Users can enter either an Arabic or Ge’ez number and press enter to see its conversion. If you input an Arabic number, the site also shows how it’s written in words. To view all numbers within a range, simply enter two numbers separated by a space or dash (e.g., ፺, ፻ ፬፻ or 1000–2000፥ ፻–፬፻።). On the conjugations other areas of the website, you might notice what appear to be unusual spellings of some surface forms—such as ይበልልዕ instead of ይበልዕ. These are not errors but deliberate choices made to show gemination in writing. Converting them to the more common surface forms is simple and straightforward.
