Introducing Redae: A spellchecker and Typing Assistant for Tigrinya and Amharic

Typing in the Ge'ez script comes with friction. With Complex keyboards, orthographic inconsistencies, and lack of real-time spellchecking and grammar tools, writing takes a long time and correcting takes a lot more.

Today, Mermru is proud to change that with the release of Redae (ረዳኤ): Spellchecker and Typing Assistant for Tigrinya and Amharic. Redae provides real-time spellchecking, suggestions, autocomplete & next-word prediction for Tigrinya & Amharic.

Available now as a Chrome Extension and a standalone Web Editor, Redae is designed to bring modern, real-time writing assistance to Tigrinya and Amharic without compromising your privacy.

Intelligent Assistance, As you type

Redae acts as a silent companion while you write on your favorite websites, emails, or social media platforms.

• Real-time Checks: Misspelled words are immediately underlined in red. A simple click offers accurate corrections.
• Smart Completion & Ghost Predictions: As you type, Redae predicts the word you are looking for. Press Tab or swipe right on mobile to insert it instantly, drastically reducing the number of keystrokes needed to compose a sentence.

Linguistic Correctness

We understand that standardizing orthography is critical for certain users. Redae includes Tigrinya Strict mode (ትግርኝኛ)), developed to strictly enforce gemination rules and standardized spelling. Switch to Tigrinya S, and use this. Amharic strict version will be added soon.

For words outside the standard dictionary, Redae features a Personal Dictionary. With a single click, you can teach Redae new vocabulary, slang, or specialized terms.

A Local-First, Privacy-Centric Architecture

Redae is privacy-aware. Your full text never leaves your device. The heavy lifting is done in your browser. Redae only queries our secure external server (the Oracle) for unknown, single word, meaning your paragraphs, ideas, and sensitive information remain entirely private and offline.
