  • The 9th Symposium of Tigray Languages Academy in Mekelle, Tigray
    Gebrekirstos G. Gebremeskel presented in Tigrinya [1, 2, and 3 ] Mermru’s core work at the 9th Symposium of the Tigray Languages Academy, held on 31 December 2023 in Mekelle, Tigray. The presentation focused on Mermru’s system of conjugation, along with the underlying motivations, the alphabet, and the root-and-pattern structure of the language that forms the foundation of Mermru’s approach.
  • A public Lecture on Mermru
    Gebrekirstos G. Gebremeskel gave [1 and 2] a public lecture in Tigrinya in Mekelle, attended by the university community and interested members of the public. The lecture focused on the nature of the Tigrinya language, the need for reforming its writing system, and how Mermru addresses that need. The event generated extensive questions and discussion, both at the venue and later on social media.
  • Machine Translation Benchmark Dataset for Languages in the Horn of Africa
    Mermru participated with Lesan.ai in the Machine Translation Benchmark Dataset for Languages in the Horn of Africa that was funded by Lacuna Fund. This project developed an evaluation dataset that helps evaluate the quality of machine translation systems for Afar, Amharic, Oromo, Somali and Tigrinya. This multi-way parallel corpus serves as a benchmark to accelerate progress in machine translation research and production systems for these five African languages.
